Your Mid-Year Medicare Check-In: 5 Things Worth Reviewing This Summer
By Paul Todd
We tend to think about Medicare only once a year — in the fall, when the Annual Enrollment Period rolls around and the mailbox fills up with brochures. But a lot can change between January and December: a new prescription, a new doctor, a move, a change in how you're feeling. Summer is a quieter, calmer time to take stock — without any deadline pressure.
After many years helping people navigate Medicare, I've noticed the same handful of surprises tend to pop up again and again. The good news is that almost all of them are avoidable with a quick mid-year look. Here are five things worth reviewing while you've got a relaxed afternoon.
1. Your prescriptions.

Medications change. You may have started something new, stopped something old, or switched to a generic. Pull out your current list and keep it somewhere handy. Knowing exactly what you take today makes every future coverage conversation easier and more accurate.
2. Your doctors and specialists.

Have you added a new specialist this year? Changed primary care providers? It's worth confirming that the people you rely on are still part of your care network. A five-minute check now can save you a frustrating surprise later.
3. Your everyday costs.

Take a glance at what you've actually been paying out of pocket so far this year — copays, visits, prescriptions. You don't need a spreadsheet. Just a general sense of whether things feel about right, higher than expected, or surprisingly manageable. That gut check is useful information when fall planning arrives.
4. Any life changes.

Did you move, retire, lose other coverage, or have a change in household? Big life events sometimes open up special opportunities to adjust your coverage outside the normal windows. If something significant has changed, it's worth a conversation.
5. Your peace of mind.

This one isn't on any official checklist, but it matters. Do you actually understand your coverage, or do you just hope it works when you need it? If there's a nagging question you've been meaning to ask, summer is a great time to finally get a clear answer.
None of this has to be complicated. A mid-year check-in isn't about changing anything — it's simply about making sure what you have still fits the life you're living right now. If everything looks good, wonderful. If something feels off, you've got plenty of time to sort it out calmly.
Paul's Medicare Expert Advice

Should you navigate Medicare alone — or have someone in your corner?
People often ask what an independent Medicare agent actually does. Here's the honest answer:
🔓 Independent = not tied to one company. The goal is finding what fits YOU.
A relationship, not a transaction — a real person to call year after year.
💵 It generally costs you nothing to work with me.
🏡 Local — someone in your community you can actually reach.
I've spent years doing this because I love taking the stress out of Medicare. There's nothing better than watching someone go from overwhelmed to confident in one conversation.
If you've been figuring this out alone and wishing you had a guide — that's exactly what I'm here for.
A quick review today can help you avoid surprises later.
