Don't Let the Summer Heat Sneak Up on You

I'll be honest — this one isn't about insurance at all. It's just a friendly check-in, because it's July, it's hot, and a little reminder never hurts.

Summer is wonderful. But the heat can sneak up on us, and as we get older, our bodies don't cool down quite as quickly as they used to. A hot afternoon that felt like nothing at 40 can feel like a lot more at 70. So here are a few simple things worth keeping in mind while we enjoy the sunshine.

Drink water before you're thirsty

By the time you feel thirsty, you're often already a little behind. Keep a glass or bottle nearby and sip throughout the day, even when you're indoors. If you're out and about, bring water with you. It's the easiest, most effective thing you can do all summer.

Know the signs of overheating

Heat can affect us before we realize it. Keep an eye out for:

  • Feeling dizzy, weak, or lightheaded

  • Headache or nausea

  • Muscle cramps

  • Skin that's hot but not sweating

  • Confusion or feeling "off"

If any of these show up, get somewhere cool, sip water, and don't tough it out. When in doubt, call for help. There's no prize for pushing through.

A quick note on medications

Some common medications can make you more sensitive to heat or affect how your body holds onto fluids. It's worth a quick conversation with your doctor or pharmacist about whether anything you take needs a little extra attention in the summer. It's a small question that can save you a rough afternoon.

Plan around the hottest part of the day

If you love your morning walk or your time in the garden, try to get it done early or later in the evening, when the sun isn't at full strength. Lightweight, light-colored clothing helps, and so does a shady spot and a hat.

Don't skip the small stuff

Summer is also a great time to keep up with the ordinary health habits that are easy to let slide — refilling prescriptions before they run out, staying current on appointments, and paying attention to how you're feeling. Staying well is a lot easier when you're on top of the little things.

And here's the soft tie-in, because I can't help myself: taking care of yourself is a whole lot easier when you're confident your coverage has your back. If you're ever unsure whether yours does, that's exactly the kind of question I'm here to answer — no pressure, ever.

Stay cool out there. 💙
