Does Medicare Cover the Dentist? Let's Clear This Up

If I had to pick the questions I get asked most often, this trio would be right at the top: "Does my Medicare cover the dentist? What about glasses? And what about a hearing aid?"

It's a great question — and an important one, because these are the everyday needs that touch almost everyone as we get older. So let me give you honest, straightforward answers, and clear up some of the confusion.

The short answer: it depends — and here's why

The most important thing to understand is that dental, vision, and hearing are handled differently than the medical care you might first think of when you picture Medicare. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) generally doesn't cover routine dental, vision, and hearing services — things like regular cleanings, eyeglasses, or routine hearing exams. There are some specific exceptions tied to certain medical situations, but for everyday routine care, that coverage usually isn't part of Original Medicare.

That surprises a lot of people, which is exactly why this post exists. Better to know now than at the dentist's front desk.

So what are the options?

Here's the good news: not having it built into Original Medicare doesn't mean you're out of options. Depending on your situation, there are different paths people take to address these needs:

  • Some Medicare Advantage plans include additional benefits beyond Original Medicare, and dental, vision, or hearing may be among them. What's offered varies quite a bit from plan to plan and by area, so the details matter.

  • Standalone dental, vision, or hearing plans exist and can be added separately, depending on what you're looking for.

  • Paying out of pocket is what some folks choose for certain routine services, sometimes alongside discount programs.

Which path makes sense really comes down to your needs, your budget, and what's available where you live. There's no one-size-fits-all answer — and honestly, anyone who tells you there is probably hasn't looked at your specific situation.

Why is confusion so common

A lot of the mix-up comes from assuming Medicare works like the employer coverage many of us had for years, where dental and vision were often bundled in. Medicare is structured differently. Once you know that going in, it's much easier to plan ahead instead of being caught off guard.

The real value here

I'm not going to promise you any particular benefit in a blog post — because the right answer genuinely depends on you. What I can do is sit down with you, look at your actual situation, and give you a clear, straight explanation of what your options are for dental, vision, and hearing. No confusion, no guessing.
